If you set a number that you would like to hit then do it and don't look back. The trick to becoming the number is to think in a way that you won't do anything to veer off course. It is often times said that no matter what the number you set for yourself is you will never make it unless you eat, sleep and live that number and this is probably right.

Most people would say that you need to figure out how much you will need to live for 30 years but that isn't enough for most people. What I suggest is to figure out what you need per month when you are 60 and the multiply that by 480 (40 years). So in order to figure this amount out you will need to determine if you will have rent, a mortgage, bills, living expenses and anything else you may need. The reason why you can't leave anything out right now is because a small amount here and there will make a huge difference once you multiply it by 480. Do you see why you need to be as detailed as possible?

Another thing you need to know about your number is that it should not matter what other people are doing and what their number might be, everybody is different and because of that your numbers will be different as well. Do what you can to come up with a number that you can be happy with and live comfortably with.
